LINER NOTES:
Guest Stars THE ORIGINAL DUKES OF DIXIELAND with the assistance of the Dixieland Greats, make this a sensational album "The Best Of Dixieland", a must for every lover of Dixieland jazz. The Dukes of Dixieland are the most spectacular and sought-after Dixieland combos in this country. They carry on the fine tradition of Dixieland jazz as it was started years ago.

Just before and during World War I, many musicians came to Chicago from the South. Five of them formed what eventually became known as the "Original Dixieland Jazz Band". They moved to New York and won fame there in 1917. That year they became the first jazz band to make phonograph records. The Dukes of Dixieland have the remarkable faculty of drawing their inspiration from the original Dixieland Band and playing in strict oldtime New Orleans style, and at the same time giving the music a modern and sophisticated touch. The group plays from special arrangements that give full scope to their electrifying enthusiasm and solid musicianship.

The origins of the Original Dukes of Dixieland goes back to 1948 to New Orleans, where two brothers, Frankie and Freddie Assunto, formed a small band for the pleasure they got out of playing oldtime Dixieland music. From these beginnings, came the group which is outstanding today for its perfect combination of technical ability and authentic Dixieland style. Dixieland jazz has an important place in the history of jazz in this county - and as played by the Dukes of Dixieland, it is truly classic - a treat for devotees of this highly specialized form of music.

Guest Star's "The Best Of Dixieland" also features these exceptional performers of Dixieland jazz: Arnell Shaw, Peewee Russell, Buck Clayton, Vic Dickinson, Bud Freeman, Jo Jones and Lou Carter - who make up the Dixieland Greats.

It is with much pleasure that Guest Star brings you this album, recorded with the highest quality techniques - to bring you the cream of Dixieland jazz artists.
